Although Lancôme has always been a classic at every department store, I’ve never really tried products from them. I’ve got M.A.C, Bobbi Brown to Shu Uemura but I’ve never really touched Lancôme. I’m not sure why, so today here’s my haul of their new collection – Lancôme Show by Alber Elbaz! If you don’t know, Alber Elbaz is an Israeli Fashion Designer and is the Creative Director for the Paris fashion house, Lanvin – since 2001. Watch him here from Vogue.
He decided to collaborate with Lancôme on a limited edition make-up collection.
“I spend my time backstage at the Lanvin shows, and when I come out at the end, all I see are people’s eyes,” Elbaz explained, while showing me a colorful pop-up-book-turned-press-release full of his iconic sketches during a meeting with Lancôme president Youcef S. Nabi at Hôtel Le Bristol in Paris last month. “It all stems from the curvaceous mascara bottles. The moment I saw them, I thought of women’s bodies,” he continued, flipping the pages of the heavy card stock that depicted renderings of four of Lancôme’s best-selling mascaras—Hypnôse Drama, Hypnôse Doll Lashes, Hypnôse Star, and Définicils—as front-row regulars. “This is where I’m looking today. Less generic and more handmade, more colorful,” he continued.” – Style.com
And the collection is indeed colourful. I never really thought twice about the collection seeing them online and in magazines until I got my hands on them. The smooth and curvaceous packaging and the loud print made them so unique, I automatically fell in love. The prints look drawn and colourful – coming in stars, dots and hearts. Kinda reminds me of a circus! I’m grateful to have three products from the collection – the Hypnose Star Eyes 5 Color Palette, the Hypnose Drama Eyes and the Hypnose Star Mascara.
The Hypnose Star Eyes Lancôme Show by Alber Elbaz features five shadows and two applicators. I absolutely love the packaging and casing. It’s sleek and just the perfect width and the print of black and blue stars is loud and fun. It feels magical in your hand. You’ll see that the Alber Elbaz collection is all about the eyes – there are no lipsticks or nail polishes or bases. That’s because Alber Elbaz really believed that eyes are the new fashion accessory and its the one thing that can really transform you the most. I agree. “I think eyes are really deep. I remember once being in a very fancy place for vacation one weekend with this group of people—their watches were shining, their nails were shining, their hair was shining, their skin and clothes were shining, and their cars were more than shining. But their eyes did not shine. I understood they were not happy. I think that this project is somehow like “happy eyes.” – Alber Elbaz.
The palette makes for a nice smokey blue eye mix. To be honest, the quality of the shadows were average and weren’t as smooth sailing as I’ve tried before. I liked how they included a matte black to balance the very shimmery palette of the rest. The Hypnose Drama Eyes in P105 is another piece I have. It’s a pearly pink color that’s super pretty too. The packaging is again smaller and sleek with pink and black polka dots that look hand drawn. I love it.
Of course the star of the show are the mascaras. It’s really what the collection is centered on. Among other mascaras available with this collection (Definicils, Star, Drama and Doll), I have the Hypnose Star Waterproof Mascara. Lancôme is known for making great mascaras. I’m sure a lot of us have heard about Lancôme by someone who talked about their Hypnose mascaras or even rave about them. I was super excited to try this out. Love the sleek and curve shaped bottle.
The Hypnose Star is supposed to be a tribute to the silver screen. It has a tapered and quite a small brush. I tried it on today and it gave me really nice separated lashes that curled up. But the mascara is for sure not a volume mascara, but more so a definition mascara. I’ll have to try it more thought, but I’m really in love with the packaging.
Love this video that pretty much sums up this collection here :)
