Brunch in Singapore: Symmetry at 9 Jalan Kubor!

Hey Everyone!

Symmetry is just about the only decent brunch I’ve had in Singapore so far. In fact, it’s a little more than decent, it’s really good guys. I might sound like I’m some pompous food critic but when you’ve lived in land of brunch called Melbourne in Australia for a few years, you’re basically set to accept that it’ll be hard to find a place where coffee isn’t just coffee and eggs aren’t just eggs. If that makes sense at all. After having visited Symmetry a few times, I thought I’d show you around one of my favourite places to have brunch in Singapore.

Symmetry is located at 9 Jalan Kubor, near Arab Street and Haji Lane. I’m not sure if it’s a walkable distance from Bugis MRT and I always find myself taking a cab or car there. It’s the corner of a row of traditional chinese shop houses which gives the place character and charm. The cafe is relatively dark or dimly lit. You’ll have to make sure you sit next to a window but there is outside seating available too if you don’t mind the heat.

The decor is really a mix of things and styles. You’ll see interesting pictures hung on brick walls and factory lights. It’s relaxing and unique. Symmetry also is a bar at night as well for drinks. I’d prefer it honestly to be a bit brighter. I’m really into seeing light. I love really well lit natural light places. Sunlight is my friend.

Here’s a peek at the menu! There’s such a large variety of delicious meals and I’m glad I’m not just seeing a bunch of sandwiches and eggs on toast (finally). There’s so many interesting things to eat – different combinations. Like they’ve really put thought into what they’re making and offering. I like that a lot. If I’m going to pay 20 dollars for a meal, I want to make sure that I’m not just getting scrambled eggs, bacon and lettuce on toast. Just be prepared to bring cash with you and the prices are steep.

Of course the meal isn’t complete with great company! I invited Yina and Jerry (her fiance) out for brunch! If you don’t know Yina yet, she’s this bubbly and amazingly smart and beautiful woman who is getting married soon! She owns The Velvet Dolls which is a super popular online store that you can check out here and a beauty and lifestyle blogger here. You’ve probably seen her before when we all went to Hong Kong Disneyland together earlier this year!

The boys came along too! Jacob and Jerry! I’m sure you all know Jacob ;) and Jerry is Yina’s Fiance. Jerry is also super nice and Yina and Jerry make such a lovely couple :)

Well, let’s get to eating shall we? We ordered 4 meals and then we decided to share it all so that we can taste everything! Yina ordered the Eggs Benedict and it was wrapped in bacon! The eggs were cooked really well and they were just so flavourful which is hard to find. I always find myself adding a little salt at other places.

I loved this so much! We also ordered the Flan which is a pork cheek with sautéed wild mushrooms, parmesan, cream and pommery mustard. It was interestingly set on this crepe looking plate as well that soaked up all the cream and sauce. It was so good at the end of the meal. This dish is such a star. The pork cheek was really soft and tender!

For drinks, I recommend the mocha! The coffee here is great. Like finally. You can smell the roast, different levels of aroma and it’s just like what I had back in my Uni days. Jacob had the soy chai latte which is also yum because he doesn’t go too well with caffeine.

I ordered the Big Breakfast! It’s basically an english breakfast – scrambled eggs, maple glazed bacon, chicken cheese sausage, and jam and toast. I loved the sausage, cheese just oozed out of it when you cut it and the eggs were nice and soft too. The butter and jam were fused onto a biscuit and was like a raspberry infused butter. It was soo good with the eggs.

Jacob had the Eggs Sur Le Plait! This is probably my favourite one because of it’s tomato base – Piquillo puree, paprika, pork sausage, garlic confit, brioche, creamed spinach, cheese, basil. It’s bascially baked eggs but I was surprised at how moist it was. The bread took it in nicely and it was just amazing. Like just a explosion of flavours really. Yum yum yum!

We ended our brunch date with a little dessert – the Waffles! We also topped it up with some blueberry ice cream that was amazing. I loved how they added peanut butter (i love peanut butter and chocolate) which really tied everything together. The waffles were crispy but soft in the inside and were perfect.

Overall, being my third time there, I’m still impressed. I still haven’t tried everything on the menu but just enough to say that this place is for sure worthy of a visit if you’re in Singapore and can’t decide amongst the many places to go to these days!  Here’s the Symmetry website if you wanna find out more!

Love,
Roseanne
